Get to Know Johnston Robotics Association

We’re a group of student robotics teams based in Johnston, Iowa who develop personal and team building skills through the efforts of creating a functional robot to be showcased at FIRST competitions.

Why should YOU join JRA?

Johnston Robotics Association believes that every student has the potential to be great! Getting involved in STEM can often be very challenging. However, our community prepares young individuals for successful futures through developing skills in teamwork, problem solving and communication.

Vision of our
Robotics Club

Science, technology and engineering are growing industries; however, it can be difficult for individuals to locate a STEM-based program in the Johnston area. We are here to provide resources that inspire individuals to seek a community in which they will become innovators in STEM education and networking through teamwork, leadership and innovation.

Our Mission

Guide students through problem solving

Build community relationships with STEM professionals

Inspire students for future STEM interests or careers

We strive to be an inclusive, energetic and collaborative environment

Learn More About Us

What is robotics?

Robotics is an interdisciplinary field that integrates multiple industries of science, technology, engineering and math. Robotics involves the design, construction, operation and use of robots. The goal of robotics is to develop a machine that can assist human functionality. JRA supports students in designing, building, programming and operating robots, and students use their robots to compete at events.

Is this a school activity?

Yes, but it also doesn’t have to be. We can fund a community-based or school-sponsored team.

What age do I have to be?

FIRST LEGO League (FLL)

Ages 4-14

FLL introduces robotics through an exciting, hands-on educational experience. Members compete in real-life challenges and are guided through these problem-solving experiences with teammates, coaches and mentors to build better futures together. Individuals are inspired through critical thinking and experimentation in coding and design skills. The FLL teams use LEGO Bricks to develop their robots in this program.

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)

Ages 12-18

FTC students build the necessary skills to think and problem solve like an engineer. Teams are tasked to design, build and code a robot to compete against other FTC teams. Students develop their abilities in learning about Android technology then how to code their bot in a variety of levels of Java-based programming.

When is the season?

At the end of summer each year, FIRST releases exactly what kind of robot a team is expected to build. Afterwards, teams have the rest of their season to bring their robot to life at showcases and competitions. State tournaments take place from January to March. World competitions occur mid to late March.

Do I need to be a student in the Johnston school district?

No! We want everyone to be able to participate and are willing to work with students from outside the district.

What are the fees associated with joining a team?

There are no fees to join! Our sponsors and donors help with purchasing equipment and entrance fees for the competitions where our teams showcase their work.
